What is SS-31?

SS-31 (elamipretide; also known in the literature as MTP-131 and Bendavia) is a synthetic mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide with the sequence D-Arg-2′,6′-dimethylTyr-Lys-Phe-NH2. Its defining research feature is selective association with cardiolipin, a phospholipid unique to the inner mitochondrial membrane.

Because of that membrane-targeting behavior, SS-31 has become a widely used probe in mitochondrial-structure and bioenergetics research, with a literature base spanning cellular models through late-stage clinical-development publications. It is supplied here as high-purity lyophilized material strictly for qualified research use.

Mechanism of Action — Research Overview

In research models, SS-31 concentrates at the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds cardiolipin and is studied for its influence on cristae architecture, electron-transport-chain organization, and membrane-potential stability under stress conditions.

Studies also examine its interaction with cytochrome c–cardiolipin binding and its effects on reactive-oxygen-species generation at the membrane level. Unlike broad antioxidants studied in research, SS-31's interest lies in its precise subcellular localization.
