What is MOTS-c?

MOTS-c (mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA-c) is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene. It belongs to a recently characterized class of signaling peptides produced by the mitochondrial genome, and has become a prominent subject in metabolic and exercise-physiology research models.

Published research describes MOTS-c as a retrograde signaling molecule — a peptide through which mitochondria communicate stress and energy status to the wider cell. It is supplied here as high-purity lyophilized material strictly for qualified research use.

Mechanism of Action — Research Overview

Research models associate MOTS-c with AMPK-pathway activation and folate-cycle/AICAR-related metabolic signaling. Studies examine how it influences glucose utilization, fatty-acid oxidation markers, and cellular stress-adaptation responses in preclinical systems.

A recurring theme in the literature is its exercise-mimetic character in animal models: MOTS-c levels respond to physical activity, and experimental administration is studied for effects on metabolic flexibility and age-related metabolic decline pathways.

Research Applications

  • Mitochondrial signaling and retrograde-communication research
  • AMPK-pathway and cellular energy-sensing studies
  • Metabolic flexibility and substrate-utilization models
  • Exercise-mimetic and muscle-metabolism research
  • Age-related metabolic-decline pathway investigations
