MOTS-c (mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA-c) is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene. It belongs to a recently characterized class of signaling peptides produced by the mitochondrial genome, and has become a prominent subject in metabolic and exercise-physiology research models.
